Portuguese New Christians in Early Modern Rome

Being a Portuguese New Christian in early modern Rome posed a number of problems for Portuguese conversos themselves and for the residents of the host city that they found themselves in. They had to grapple with the problem of alterity and how it was elaborated in the new setting they found themselves in. Through a perusal of sources: notorial records of various kinds, registers from the Spanish and Portuguese national churches, official papal decrees and diplomatic correspondence it is possible to gleen some of the ways in which these individuals dealt with that complexity. A presentation of several case studies allows us to derive some conclusions about how these members of the nação went about negotiating their collective and individual identity with the society around them and how they elaborated self-representation in their Roman exile. Aside from the intrinsic interest from a historical point of view of what the sources allow us to gauge with respect to the people under consideration, a subject which has never been studies in any systematic way before, the case of New Christians in early modern Rome gives one the possibility of dealing with the larger questions of alterity, migration and collective self-representation in the city that was known at the time as the “capital of the world.”
