סיימתי את לימודי הדוקטורט שלי באוניברסיטת ארלנגן בגרמניה בהתמחות בפילולוגיה שמית, אסלאם ואשורולוגיה.
במחקרי אני מתמקד בחקר הדיאלקטים ברחבי העולם הערבי, וכן להגים יהודיים-ערביים בני ימינו. תחום נוסף של מחקריי עוסק בחקר שפות שמיות. ערכתי מחקרי-שדה במקומות שונים בארץ ובעולם. תחום אהוב עלי במיוחד הוא האטימולוגיה.
מחקריי הם מולטי-דיסציפלינאריים ואינם עוסקים בלשון גרידא, אלא משיקים לתחומים רבים נוספים: בוטניקה, גיאולוגיה, היסטוריה, קרטוגרפיה, פולקלור ועוד.
