במקביל לעבודתו בחוג לתולדות ישראל מלמד פרופ' שגב בתוכנית רודרמן ופעיל בפעילות השונות של התוכנית. מחקריו של פרופ' שגב ממוקדים בעת המודרנית ועוסקים בסוגיות כגון, לידתו של הלובי היהודי, פעילותה של יהדות ארצות הברית בתקופת השואה ויחסי הגומלין המורכבים בין הקהילה היהודית אמריקנית ליישוב בארץ לפני 1948 ומדינת ישראל.
