תחומי מחקר
אני פרופסור בחוג לשפה וספרות ערבית באוניברסיטת חיפה. במחקר ובהוראה אני מתמקד בספרות ערבית מודרנית, בעיקר שירה, וספרות יהודית-ערבית. כתבתי עבודת דוקטורט באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, לימדתי באוניברסיטת תל-אביב, ומאז 1989 אני נמנה עם סגל החוג בחיפה. לאורך השנים שהיתי במספר מרכזי מחקר ומכונים ללימודים מתקדמים כמו באוקספורד, ברלין, הרווארד, לייפציג, פילדלפיה ומרסיי והייתי פרופסור אורח במספר אוניברסיטאות כמו האוניברסיטה החופשית של ברלין, אוניברסיטת היידלברג ואוניברסיטת גוטנברג.
אני מלמד קורסים בתחומי הספרות הערבית המודרנית על כל ענפיה, בעיקר בתחום השירה ומדריך עבודות מ"א ודוקטורט תוך התמקדות ביחסי הגומלין בין השירה המודרנית לשירה הקלסית. נקודה מרכזית שאני משתדל להדגיש אותה, הן בהוראה הן במחקר, היא שמבחינה היסטורית-ספרותית יש להתייחס לשירה הערבית כרצף מתמשך ולכן כל ניסיון לעשות הבחנה מהותית בין השירה הערבית בימי הביניים לבין השירה המודרנית היא מלאכותית ומקשה על הבנת ההקשרים התוכניים והפיוטיים בשירה שפורסמה מאז שלהי המאה התשע עשרה ועד ימינו. אין ולו משורר ערבי אחד בעת החדשה, גם אם הוא חדשן רדיקלי, שאינו פועל כאשר מיטב משוררי ערב בימי הביניים נושפים בעורפו. העובדה שהשירה הערבית, לפחות זאת הכתובה בערבית הסטנדרטית (فصحى), נכתבה באותה שפה, שהלקסיקון הפיוטי שלה לא השתנה באופן בסיסי, יוצרת תשתית אחידה לשירה הערבית מאז צמיחתה ועד ימינו.
כחוקר אני מתמקד בספרות ערבית מודרנית על כל ענפיה וגם מתרגם ממנה לעברית ולאנגלית. במסגרת מחקריי עסקתי גם ביחסי הגומלין בין הספרות הערבית הקנונית לספרות הלא-קנונית, הן למבוגרים הן לילדים, כמו המדע הבדיוני, הספרות הבלשית, השירה העממית וכדומה. בתחום הספרות הערבית-יהודית אני מתמקד בכתיבה בערבית של סופרים יהודים מאז ימי הג'אהליה ועד ימינו ובעובדה המצערת שאנחנו מתקרבים לזמן שבו כתיבה בערבית על ידי יהודים תהיה נחלת העבר בלבד, בעיקר בשל היחס השלילי לתרבות הערבית בציבור היהודי. מאז הקמת מדינת ישראל לא צמח ולו יוצר יהודי אחד שכותב בערבית לעומת מאות שפעלו במחצית הראשונה של המאה העשרים, בעיקר בעיראק ובמצרים.
