אודות
אני פרופסור במחלקה ללימודי המזרח התיכון והאסלאם בו אני מלמד מאז שנת 2007. כיהנתי כראש המחלקה בין השנים 2022-2017, ועודני מכהן כסגן דיקן למחקר בפקולטה למדעי הרוח מאז תחילת שנת 2020. אני חוקר של האימפריה העות'מאנית במאה ה-19 באזור 'סוריה הגדולה' בדגש על פטיציות שנשלחו לסולטאן, מיפוי, אוכלוסיות כפריות, ההתיישבות היהודית בארץ-ישראל בשלהי התקופה העות'מאנית, מהפכת 'התורכים הצעירים' ב-1908 והשפעתה באזור, ולבסוף העיר עזה וסביבתה. לאחרונה השלמתי מחקר גדול על עזה בשלהי התקופה העות'מאנית במימון קרן גרמניה-ישראל (GIF) בשיתוף עם פרופ' יוהאן בוסאו מאוניברסיטת בוכום. מטרתנו הייתה להבין עיר חשובה זאת שנשכחה במחקר המתמקד לרוב בירושלים ובערי הנמל הצפוניות יותר של יפו, חיפה וביירות ,תוך שילוב בין מקורות עות'מאניים, מקורות בערבית שחלקם לא פורסמו עד היום, מפות, ותצלומים, וכל זאת תוך שימוש נרחב בטכנולוגיות דיגיטליות העומדות היום לרשות ההיסטוריון. ניתן לבקר באתר הפרוייקט ולהתרשם:.https://gaza.ub.rub.de/gaza
כיום אני מבצע מחקר על באר-שבע בשלהי התקופה העות'מאנית בצוותא עם פרופ' יוהאן בוסאו מאוניברסיטת בוכום, במימון קרן גרדה הנקל. במקביל אני חוקר שרידי בוסתנים בדרום מישור החוף בצוותא עם פרופ' גיא ברעוז, במימון משרד המדע. אני גם מבצע מחקר במימון הקרן הלאומית למדעים (ISF) על ההתיישבות היהודית בארץ-ישראל במפקד העות'מאני של 1905.
אני מתמחה בעבודה בארכיון העות'מאני באיסטנבול ובירושלים ומנסה במחקריי להראות את חשיבות שילוב החומר העות'מאני במחקרים על סוריה הגדולה אשר לרוב נעשים מתוך הפריזמות הלאומיות הצרות תוך ראיה מעוותת של התקופה העות'מאנית.
במסגרת עבודתי באוניברסיטת חיפה, אני פועל רבות להנגשת הידע האקדמי לציבור הרחב, דבר בו אני מאמין מאוד, ויזמתי שורה של כנסים וימי עיון על התקופה העות'מאנית בארץ-ישראל לציבור הרחב, לצד שלוש תערוכות על מחקרי: בנושא פטיציות לסולטאן (2013), בנושא מיפוי עות'מאני (2016), ובנושא עזה העות'מאנית.(2020)
בשעות הפנאי אני אב במשרה מלאה לשתי בנות, וחובב מושבע של טיולים וצילום.

רקע אקדמי
את לימודי ה-ב.א. השלמתי בהצטיינות באוניברסיטה העברית בשנת 2000 בחוגים למזרח תיכון ולגאוגרפיה. על כן לא מפתיע שרבים ממחקרי עד היום ממוקמים בתפר שבין היסטוריה לגיאוגרפיה. את לימודי המ.א. והדוקטורט המשכתי באוניברסיטת שיקאגו במחלקה ללימודי השפות והציוויליזציה של המזרח הקרוב, שם סיימתי את הדוקטורט בשנת 2007. באותה השנה הצטרפתי לחוג ללימודי המזרח התיכון והאסלאם בחיפה, ומאז אני מלמד שם קורסים העוסקים באימפריה העות'מאנית ובתורכיה. במסגרת מחקריי אני מרבה לבקר בארכיון העות'מאני באיסטנבול, משם אני שואב רבים מהמקורות עליהם אני מתבסס בעבודתי. בשנים האחרונות התחלתי גם ללמד קורסים על הקשר בין פוליטיקה ומשבר האקלים והסביבה במזרח התיכון.
